INTERNSHIP
Are you a master's-level graduate student seeking your advanced or second-year internship or field placement this fall? Afya Psychiatric Services is now welcoming applications for our Mental Health Counseling Internship Program. We are committed to providing high-quality training and meaningful learning experiences for future clinicians.
About the Internship
Interns will have the opportunity to provide:
- Individual psychotherapy for adults, adolescents, and/or children
Services may be provided in our outpatient group practice setting and/or via telehealth. This is a hybrid, UNPAID internship with the possibility of future employment upon successful completion of the program.
Schedule Requirements
- Minimum 20 hours per week on site, regardless of university requirements
- Weekly clinical supervision (must be available during traditional business hours)
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be currently enrolled in a graduate-level program in Social Work, Professional Counseling, Psychology, or another human services–related field for the entire duration of the placement
- Have completed a course in psychopathology
- Possess foundational knowledge of clinical diagnoses and treatment planning
- Be willing to undergo and pass federal, state, and child protective background checks

We are seeking Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners and Medical Nurse Practitioners to join our team IMMEDIATELY as independent contractors. This super urgent hire supports a residential substance use disorder program by completing intakes and follow-up visits.
You Must Be:
- Licensed: Active Nurse Practitioner license with prescriptive authority in Virginia (Psych NP or Medical NP).
- Experienced: Preferably with psychiatric or substance use treatment background; comfortable working in residential progr
- Collaborative: Able to coordinate care effectively with therapists, counselors, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Professional: Strong communicator with excellent assessment, documentation, and follow-up skills.
You Are Excellent At:
- Completing patient intakes and follow-up evaluations
- Monitoring medication management and clinical progress
- Providing support for co-occurring psychiatric and medical conditions
- Collaborating with treatment teams to deliver holistic, patient-centered care

We are seeking Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) to join our team as independent contractors. You'll enjoy a robust caseload from day one, strong administrative backing, and the freedom to structure your work in a way that suits your life.
What We’re Looking For
You must be:
- Licensed: Active LPC or LCSW license in the state (or equivalent credential).
- Experienced: Background in mental health counseling; experience with trauma and substance use disorders preferred.
- Skilled: Knowledgeable in modalities such as CBT, Motivational Interviewing, EMDR, or Psychodynamic Therapy.
- Culturally competent: Able to work effectively with diverse populations including children, families, individuals with disabilities, and underserved communities.
- Professional: Strong communicator with excellent clinical documentation and assessment skills.
You Are Excellent At:
- Conducting intakes, diagnostic evaluations, and developing treatment plans
- Providing individual, group, and family therapy (in-person and via telehealth)
- Delivering specialized care in areas such as trauma recovery, PTSD, grief, and addiction
- Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team for comprehensive, holistic care
- Maintaining accurate, timely, HIPAA-compliant clinical records
